Ooooo, awesome. I been ranting about octopodes for a while now since I discovered all the symbolic/tropic permutations of the squiggly things. Disorder, destructive insatiable sexual appetite (which is what these beautiful pictures made me think of), and entropic burning-out of energy seem to be the main things writers associate octopi with. check out Oppian's Halieutica, also "Ulysses" (The End of the World octopus in 'Circe'), Hugo in "Toilers of the Sea", obviously HG Wells, etc etc. they're cool.

Hehe, taste the long arms of the law you fool shark! Thx Mer...that's a great video on many different levels. Another video I'd like to see: An octo bringing down a giant sea snake :D

The more I think about it, the more I think a live shoot is a pipe dream. They're just too smart and cool. Even in captivity they might feel "disrespected" or something...then they'd take out the whole film crew. They might even pull the film out of the camera first ;) The whole thing would end up as an urban legend...

Seriously...you'd need a film squad of super-mutant X-Men.

Octopi are so beautiful and intelligent, I lubs them. Bun got me <a href=http://www.tapirback.com/tapirgal/gifts/friends/aquatic/octopus-stuffed-animal-f830.htm rel="nofollow">this for Christmas</a> and I still haven't stop squealing.

I remember seeing these guys under observation in a neighboring lab at Scripps where my dad worked (deep sea biophysicist). They're by far and away the smartest invertebrates, with rather astounding problem solving skills, long term memory, and they even "play" with objects the way a lot of mammals do.

It really would be incredible to see a pretty live nude frolick with a pretty live cepphy, but yeah, posing with a large one would be risky bidness... <a href=http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7004909622962894202 rel="nofollow">they'll fuck your</a> shit up, <a href=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNaRbh2dl6I rel="nofollow">totally</a>...even if you're not a direct threat. Rawr!

The idea of having a live Octopus interact with a model underwater is one I really dig...how viable and safe that is aside...one has to wonder what it'd be like to see such a visually arresting creature come alive beyond it's scary sea creature status.

I guess you could kind of do it if the creature was in captivity and a bit more people friendly...I think doing it in the wild would put the creature in far too much danger from predators...I remember making a similar mistake during a snorkeling trip as a kid...wanted a cool pick of a certain lil crab...but accidentally took it out of its protective element and got it eaten by a larger creature.

Woops.

There IS an aesthetic in cold flaccid cephalopod flesh, as the above photos make very effective use of, but I agree, that an artistically presented interaction with a lively octopus, preferably of the giant Pacific variety, would be quite astonishing behold.
It would be a few strides beyond the "look what we got from the fish market" feeling I get from most similarly themed images.

Thanks for posting this, Zoe!

"Admittedly, I’d rather see a model interact with a virile creature, not mere sushi - and I don’t mean in the hentai sense."

Agreed. I bet there's a lot of us who want to see that. I don't know much about working with cephies, but the logistics have got to be a bitch. Would have to be underwater...so you'd need a model with good breath or hooked up to a scuba. Would need a non-toxic and docile octo or three that wouldn't shoot ink at the model (actually that could be cool). If anyone could get all this to work and make it look hawt they'd be my idol for alltime. Maybe all it takes is for the right photographer to talk to the right marine biologist...???
