Actually, I thought Merlin’s cheerful deadpan approach was hilarious. I’m relieved to know I’m not the only who finds the combination of the word “steampunk” with “masturbatory” a tad redundant at this point in time.

However, Jake Von Slatt’s earnest response and strained attempts at humor made me wince a bit. I think he’s an endearing and highly intelligent fellow, but his rebuttal only proves the point Merlin was trying to make. From the BB comment thread:

Ouch, but true.

Wanna build a better jetpack? Hot glue cogs to your toaster/cat/ipod dock/bouzouki? Dance around in goggles, toppers and spats to tracks off the Definitive Cleopatra Compilation? Go for it! But why the outrage when folks start to poke fun? Surely, on some level, even the most solemn queefernaut must realize that endless semantics arguments and breathless declarations of steampunk as a “lifestyle choice” are giggle-inducing. Lighten up, sweetings!
