clairdelune, Captain Blood is a fine, fine film. It goes a little slack in the sails at certain points, in my opinion, but it has the 19 year old Olivia de Havilland going for it. Which is saying a lot.

Errol Flynn and I share a birthday which seemed a lot more interesting in the early 60s than it does now. I remember reading “My Wicked, Wicked Ways” in my late teens and taking a kind of perverse glee in it but those days have passed.

Ha HA! You fellows! I couldn’t agree more! This has been one of my favorite films since childhood. So much so that I as well signed up for fencing in college, volunteered for two years aboard a (replica) man-of-war, and have since been slaying the ladies (it’s always far more complicated then they make it appear) and traveling to far off lands in the name of Queen (not actually) and country (not that either.) And while these days I find myself with a spade in my hand more often than a cutlass (became an archaeologist after it all) I still yearn for adventure on the high seas a la Mr. Flynn. So lets raise a glass to this splendid chap on his centennial. Huzzah!

The Seahawk is pretty great, but for me it’s always been Captain Blood.

BTW, there’s an odd 1997 biographical film:Flynn, that Guy Pearce starred in. Amazingly bad.

Great tribute! I’ve put an excerpt from this site on my Frazer Nash website. That is a rare car which Mr. Flynn owned and lost in Italy when he was sued by “friend” Bruce Cabot, Still missing! Photos of him with the car are on my Frazer Nash website.
