BTC: Kooky Swedish Hottie, Cia Berg (and Ubangi)

Does anybody else who wore a flannel tied around their waist in the mid 90s remember the band Whale? Anyone? Kinda? Barely? Yeah… I know most of the hissing, static backwash of post-grunge era MTV Alternative Nation had all but evaporated from my palate. But to this day, there’s a place in my heart (and pants) for that frizzy-haired “Hobo Humpin’ Slobo Babe” and her mouth full of braces. In the Venn Diagram where silly and sexy intersect, stands Cia Berg.

Years after Whale had receded into distant memory, I stumbled across the above video of a super young, extra svelte Cia goofing off with her first band, Ubangi. I’d never heard of ’em before, but it was love at first listen. The guys in the group are hilarious; they reminds me of a low-rent, less dignified DEVO (if they’re derivative it’s in the best possible way!) and baby Berg looks quite fetching without the punk rock perm.

A few more adorable Ubangi clips (including a ditty called “Where Have All the Good Sperms Gone”??!) after the jump.

Hahahaha. Your guess is as good as mind. Wacky Swedes.

    I REMEMBER WHALE!

I got their collaboration with Tricky, “Young Dumb n’ Full of Cum,” on a mix tape from my friend Holly in 1998 (though it was mis-labeled as Hobo-Humping Slobo Babe) and subsequently made my parents buy me their All Disco Dance Must End In Broken Bones for my birthday. I loved this album so much! I recently dug it up during my move out of LA and gave it another listen while packing.

I’ve never heard of Ubangi, though. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS! I’ve got the perfect wake-up music for this morning.

Hobo Humpin’ Slobo Babe was the first video I looked up on youtube. For years I was half convinced that I had dreamed up those men in tinfoil skirts…

I first saw Whale as the video-within-the-video of Beavis & Butthead (also where I first discovered Daisy Chainsaw). I remember how somehow they opened up for Blur at Irving Plaza. Oh the 90s.

Yep — Beavis & Butthead make up my memories of this, too. :P

The last clip is the intro for a music video chart show called Popitopp what aired late 80s early nineties here in Sweden..

Oh, that is neat, had forgotten about Ubangi! And that’s Orup! I never knew he was cool once.
He would later turn in to this:

According to the Swedish wikpedia entry, Cia Berg now lives in Sardinia, Italy, owns a book store “trying to sell good books” and exporting wine and delicacies to sweden.

The internet reads my mind I swear……..I was thinkin about Hobo Humping Slobo Babe the other day, and how much it turned me on at age thirteen……..it felt like a forbidden pleasure, a “your not supposed to like this but you do ” kind of feeling.

Ubangi……..that’s an innuendo, isn’t it? Naughty girl!
