BTC: Kure Kure Takora / Gimme Gimme Octopus

It’s been days since we hastily cooked up that batch of bathtub MDMA in honor of the Zobogrammatron’s incept date. Still, I don’t think I’ve quite come down yet, so I’m not really sure what we’re watching right now, folks. I do know that it is very colorful and shiny and retro and Japanese and somehow vaguely Lovecraftian by way of Fisher Price, and thus, it cannot help but to be better than coffee.*

OctopieInTheSky, who has created an entire YouTube channel devoted to the show, may be able to clarify:

A messed-up kids program which first appeared on the Japanese Broadcasting Corporation’s JOCX-TV on October 1st, 1973. Every episode is basically about Kure Kure Takora wanting something that belongs to the other characters and then tries to steal it. While the episodes only run 2 and a half minutes each, you’ll be treated to acts of:

  • antisocial behavior (always guaranteed)
  • random violence (guaranteed)
  • cannibalism
  • Love triangles that cross not only species but also plant/animal classifications
  • torture
  • set decorations inspired by Fauvism
  • suicide attempts

Enjoy!

Yo Gabba Gabba and Teletubbies, eat yer hearts out. Via Cephalopod Tea Party.

Several more episodes after the jump.

*Certainly, watching a socially challenged cephalopod make the same adorable mistakes over and over again is preferable to turning around and facing the sight of that strange little arseman from Craiglist, who refuses to accept that the party is over, ignoring our repeated offers of payment, a taxi, or clothing; an awkward situation that has prompted Z to retreat into the depths of the Catacombs, and Nadya to flee for London. As I type this, I see him reflected in my computer screen, gyrating in a pile of burst balloons, absently humming “Goodbye Horses” as he fondles the industrial strength binder clips affixed to his leathery man teats. I am afeared.

Indeed, even yours truly (generally) respects the sacrosanct “plant/animal” barrier – heck I’m old-school and tend to bond within the mammals.

Then again, I’m not an octopus. . .

upon seeing it from behind my shoulder, a 6 year old replied “is it magic?”

    “yes, its magic”

Gotta love Kure Kure Takora. I wish more kids shows taught children about violence and mind-altering substances.

That makes my brain feel like it is trippin balls even more than a marathon of Yo Gabba Gabba!

You know how they say stuff is lost in translation? I think in this case the madness is clearly universal, intentional, and probably lead to all the off the wall stuff Japan is now known for.

Feels like a much more messed up version of Sid & Marty Krofft’s work…

I am studying Japanese now… part of the reason why I haven’t had time to read Coilhouse as much as I used to. I’m glad I popped by tonight, though. These are amazing.

Also, my skill in that language is still obviously nowhere close to that of a four year old’s, because I only understood a couple words from those.

    Thank you!
