Some Special Coilhouse Announcements
This past Friday, October 10th, was our 1-year anniversary of going live with Coilhouse. What a year it’s been! 555 posts, 6,470 comments and one print issue later, here we are. We were going to post something on the day of, but we completely forgot, and this is why: October 10th also happened to be the final deadline for all Issue 02 content. That’s right! Issue 02 is absolutely, positively, 100% a go. Thanks, primarily, to you lot. GROUP HUG!!!
We have a lot of other fantastic news to share, as well. First off, we’d like you to know that Coilhouse Magazine Issue 01 is now available in a wide variety of wonderful independent shops across the United States, including Quimby’s, Atomic Books, Trident, and Chicago Comics. Please click here to see the growing list of businesses.* Secondly, we are very, very proud to announce that our feisty wee upstart has landed distribution in the three largest bookstores in the United States: Borders, Barnes & Noble and Books-a-Million. This means a vast majority of our US readers will be able to go into a local store and find Coilhouse (minus these two NSFW pages, which were only in our limited edition) on the shelves. Including Issue 01. Today. For a complete listing of Borders/B&N locations, click here.
This website is changing, too. The Staff Page has been updated with new bios and photos to showcase our growing family of contributors, and we’ve finally written up a proper Coilhouse FAQ. The following questions, among others, are are covered:
- How often is the magazine published?
- Is it possible to subscribe?
- Who should I contact if there’s a problem with my order?
- I want to carry Coilhouse in my store. Is this possible?
- Can I submit to Coilhouse Magazine?
One final announcement we’d like to make: there are very limited quanities of the website-only limited edition Issue 01 left. 800 are gone, 200 remain. If you’ve been thinking about getting a copy but haven’t made up your mind yet, now is the time.
Looking to the future, we can say with confience that Issue 02 is going to be amazing. We learned a lot from Issue 01, so the bar’s been raised a notch or two. Many of you had positive things to say about the print quality; for this issue, we’re going even glossier. The paper will be of a thicker stock, and we’re implementing some surprise touches to further enhance your tactile experience. Best of all, the content in Issue 02 –which should be out before the end of the year– is incredible. Just you wait!
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for being here. Your continuing support and participation in this endeavor has meant the world us.

*Additionally, Wildilocks in Melbourne, Austrialia has some copies for sale! (Rest assured, we’re actively exploring more extensive international sales options for all forthcoming issues.)

Wheeehooo, I can’t wait to get my mits on #2–and maybe I’ll even be able to buy it in person! I should have known I could count on my beloved Atomic Books to carry CH!
October 13th, 2008 at 6:39 pm
Awesome that you guys have locked in two GREAT Chicago comic book shops. I’ll definitely look the next time I stop in.
October 13th, 2008 at 6:53 pm
Will Coilhouse be available through magazine distributors? I work in an independent University bookstore and would love to sell this magazine!
October 13th, 2008 at 6:59 pm
HUZZAH!
“Starving in the belly…of the whale”
Just cos’…nevermind me.
October 13th, 2008 at 7:19 pm
What should I buy along with an issue to properly freak out the mall clerks at the local Borders?
October 13th, 2008 at 7:25 pm
thekamisama: Hmm… how about “How Sarah Palin Won the Election… And Saved America”? Hmm, maybe not.
divine_debris: What bookstore? Let me know, and I can check it against our list. Please email me at [email protected]. Thank you!

It’s been such a great year watching this blog and magazine grow. Thank you, thank you, thank you again for doing this. I greatly look forward to issue no.2 and all the issues after that!
October 13th, 2008 at 10:29 pm
Congratulations! I’m especially happy that Trident, one of my favourite book stores back home, is supporting you.
Is the first issue available in stores now?
October 13th, 2008 at 10:51 pm
Ligeia, yes! It should be right there on the stands. Not sure why Quimby’s hasn’t listed it on their site yet, maybe they’re just lagging. it’s already up on Atomic’s site. And I’m pretty certain that Trident already has it.
It’s so cool that people are recognizing their favorite local stores. I wish I could visit each city, and visit each of these legendary bookshops.

That’s great news. Y’all must’ve been busting your collective asses to get this out there–publishing is not for the faint of heart, and if you doubt either your manhood or your vigor, you’ll find yourself drowning in the black pools of People Magazine!
So go forward and look not to the Home and Gardens, for your path leads through the glossy paper and into history!
October 14th, 2008 at 12:01 am
That’s great news! I think I will have to stay as internet buyer, but it’s also great you are making it available as subscribtion, So i don’t have to sweat my web-orders of magazines! :)
Congrats and lots of love.

I loved the supervillain article in Coilhouse 01. Can we expect something similar in issue 2?
October 14th, 2008 at 1:42 am
Jon, I think we all doubt our vigor from time to time, but our manhoods? Never. We’re all hung like elephants, my friend. Nadya’s is bigger than a baby’s arm. It’s scary.
It would seem Jerem has developed sudden onset Tom Waits tourette’s. (Don’t worry, Jerem. There’s medication for that.)
Velveteenbright, Zo has a couple of zingers up her sleeve for Issue 02 that I think you’ll really enjoy. :)
October 14th, 2008 at 2:48 am
Very pleased to see a Melbourne stockist! YAY for fortuitous international residency. You’ve got yourself a dedicated print-customer.
October 14th, 2008 at 5:59 am
Velveteenbright,
Supervillians are cool. ;)
October 14th, 2008 at 7:17 am
Kris bought limited #1 for my birthday and it was better than all my other big presents. :P Only he just realised the other day that ‘I haven’t read the articles yet, I only thought to look at the pictures!’ Ish cute, awwww. ^^
I can’t wait for #2, the first issue is fabulous but not thick enough! I want an encyclopaedic Coilhouse. ;) My favourite is the supervillain guide, a notion I always adhered to but it’s nice to read and bring me out of a low moment. Usually when I’m curled in my [admittedly black] jeans and eating far too much chocolate on the weekends.
I’d love to submit one day (I’m a writer and engage in various other arts) but I need to build up the courage.
xx

And never seen a bad one. :)
October 14th, 2008 at 12:00 pm
Awesome news all around. Nice job y’all!
Wonder…in the bookstores will I see this next to “Black Book” or “Bizarre” ???
October 14th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
Happy Birthday (even though it was yesterday, same day as my birthday)! Congratulations, all of you. And can I say that I really do love you guys? Because I do.

October 14th, 2008 at 1:11 pm
@ David: apparently they’re already already going on in full swing over in this thread.
October 14th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
Congrats! Hope issue 2 also has some ‘limited edition’ inclusions…the first issue was just perfect.
October 14th, 2008 at 2:50 pm

October 14th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
Hey, thanks for the shout out, If you’re in/around Boston, MA, USA you should come down to the Trident and get Coilhouse, I run magazines there, we got it in a couple of weeks ago and I was very excited to be able to sell it to people. I dare you to buy out all my copies so I have to up the draw, nothing at work could make me happier.
You guys are my heroes. keep up the awesome work, you guys and not esquire are the squawking blinking hyperconnected future of magazines.
October 14th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
Aww, Andy, now I want to come to Boston and buy a copy!
Thank you so much for your support.
October 14th, 2008 at 6:01 pm
When Issue one arrived in my letterbox I was completely overwhelmed with excitement! So much great material in one magazine and such a talented, dedicated team to put it all together – hearty congratulations to you all!
Really excited to hear Wildilocks in Melboune (my neck of the woods) will be stocking Issue two!
October 14th, 2008 at 6:27 pm
@Mer
I need not those properheadmakey med-EEE-caTIONS!
Well…I don’t *want* them, at least.
October 14th, 2008 at 9:47 pm
overjoyed, ladies! i’m thrilled at your success, but i’m delighted even more because i know it’s no lark – it’s a product of wild talent, dedication and passion. and that is the best kind of success there is.
October 15th, 2008 at 9:40 am
Congratulations ladies! Phase 1 of your bid for world dominance appears to be complete. Quite the past year it’s been and I’m looking forward to issue #2…crossing my fingers that an article about how steampunk will never be as cool as cyberpunk pops up along the way. Could be the next Dr.Steel vs. Dr. Horrible kinda topic…and we all know how fun that was!
It’s good to see a print mag on the stands that’s actually exciting. It hasn’t been that way in so long outside of one-off issues now and again. I’ll be sure to put an issue in front of the more forgettable rags and “accidentally” leave an issue where it’ll get a lot of foot traffic!
October 15th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
Congratulations and Happy Birthday!
Just about everyone I’ve let peruse my copy of Coilhouse 01 has stated they now needed to buy their own.
October 15th, 2008 at 5:11 pm
So, my question is, is the new version of issue one just missing two pages, or are there new pieces of content, no matter how minor, I will buy another copy for the sake of having it.
October 15th, 2008 at 5:39 pm
@ A, to clarify, the two Neogender pages are replaced with 2 new pages, the editorial about piercing that I write about above. Thank you for asking.
“Could be the next Dr.Steel vs. Dr. Horrible kinda topic…and we all know how fun that was!”
@ Tequila: You know, people still comment on that thread. I just saw another comment pop up there yesterday. Haha!
@ sonia: Issue 01’s not the last time we do something special like alternate versions, but Issue 02 will be just one version.
@ Jessica: Birthday album, so cute!
Thanks again, everyone.
October 15th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
Thanks for the Wildilocks tip-off.. i’ve been enquiring all across Melb. Got their last copy of the ltd ed. ;)
October 16th, 2008 at 12:48 am
You’re welcome, m1k3y!
October 16th, 2008 at 7:58 am
I just wanted to tell you that you are sold out in at least 2 of the Chicago Borders locations. Great job, ladies and gents!!!
October 16th, 2008 at 11:52 am
m1key: Thanks! Yes, we sent some limited-ed copies to Melbourne because Cass from Wildilocks is a friend, but other than that, this version is not in any store, ever.

A love letter to Coilhouse:
Thank you so much for creating this magazine and for all of your efforts. It is a welcome interruption to my mere bitchings about a lack of countercultures nowadays (from what I can see).
Absorbing and appreciating,
Christine
