BTC, Bonus Edition: I Hate the Bloody Queeeeeeeen!
There are some days when one cup of coffee, can of Jolt, or installment of Better than Coffee just isn’t enough. This Monday was such a day for me, until I stumbled across this lost masterpiece of punk rock. Hot on the heels of this morning’s regular BTC installment (Mer discussing the infectious Hindi rock n’ roll ditty Eena Meena Deeka), here’s an extra shot for all you late risers and morning zombies. Ladies and gentlemen, The Queenhaters!
This punk parody appeared on the Canadian sketch comedy show SCTV in 1983, featuring Martin Short as the lead singer, Andrea Martin as the lead guitarist/back-up vocalist, Eugene Levy as the second guitarist, Joe Flaherty on bass, and John Candy on drums. It later received its very own cover by Mudhoney.
Via Milly, who adds that she totally wishes that these guys were real.

Wow…I had not seen that or really any SCTV in ages. Thanks for that jolt to the head. WHY can’t they be real though? What keeps countless bands from just going this balls out mad sometimes? Didn’t know Mudhoney did a cover…was never a big fan but I like em a bit more now.
Surprised nobody did a variation on this with Bush in the title. Totally lends itself to it.
Now I kinda want to start a horribly untalented punk band just to do this song.

As a Canadian who does not really like hockey, back bacon, or Celine Dion, people often ask me what makes me proud of my country. This right here would be the answer to that question.
…just kidding, I fucking love back bacon.

I would have to agree with Infamous Amos, I also love back bacon, and Martin Short has always been punk as fuck.
