Zoe Keating’s New Album: “Into the Trees”
O frabjous day! Our beloved friend, the cellist Zoë Keating, has finally released her long-anticipated new album, Into the Trees. It’s streaming free on her website. It is gorgeous. If you like what you hear, you can purchase all eleven tracks for immediate download –directly from Zoë– in your choice of 320k mp3, FLAC, or just about any other format your heart desires. You also have the option of snail mail-ordering an artfully designed and presented CD. Quoth the composer: “No middlemen involved other than PayPal and your purchase allows me to keep making music, for which I am profoundly grateful.”

Last spring, while Zoë was still finishing up the album (and still pregnant with her beautiful baby boy, Alex, born May 13!), she granted Coilhouse Magazine an extensive, giddy interview. We discussed all manner of things both whimsical and practical– from the spirit of old growth forests and her biological imperative to counteract those proselytizing Quiverfull weirdos to the advantages of musicians self-producing and releasing their own albums, from the joy of nerd solidarity, to stage fright, to Tulip Mania. The article, titled “Into the Trees With Zoë Keating,” will be running in our upcoming issue #05, and features photography by our own dear Nadya, as well as Peter Hinson (the pictures you’re looking at are outtakes from that shoot), typography and illustration by Teagan White, and an exquisite custom-crafted wardrobe courtesy of Gibbous Fashions.

Ordered already! Should have it in the mail within the week-ish. Not many musicians these days get me this excited. So when it happens, I let my passion run free.

Pre-ordered ages ago and mine is shipping to me as we speak! SO. EXCITED. Natoma was the album I listened to over and over again while I labored with my second daughter. :) (Probably TMI, but that’s how much Zoe’s music means to me)

Zoe was eating at Mifune (a restaurant in SF Japantown) at the same time I was before going to a show at the Fillmore, and I had to keep myself from staring at her. She looks like a dryad — a warm yet somehow otherworldly beauty.

Aww I love Zoe. She looks awful purdy in that gown. I remember being introduced to her through Rasputina in 04 I think. Got to see her play with them too. She was so good. I wish I got to see her support Amanda Palmer for WKAP tour too. She’s a cool chick I’ll have to check out her new album.
Speaking of new albums, I’m surprised Rasputina’s new abum Sister Kinderhook hasn’t been mentioned on here yet. It’s sooooo good.

A lot of this reminds me distinctly of Apocalyptica’s initial output of the Metallica covers, which is mostly a good thing as I adored Apocalyptica’s cello versions and this music seems to be in exactly the same vein.

@Typhoid I love that early Apocalyptica stuff too! But beyond the obvious fact that they’re all classically trained cellists who have ventured into unexpected territories, I don’t think they’re “exactly in the same vein” at all. Can you explain why you think that?

Just got mine in the post today. I am amazed how the technique used on this album is so similar to her last album, and yet it evokes a totally different atmosphere. It really does give off a strong “rustic” vibe. Beautiful.

Found a new favorite, actually when Escape Artist started my boyfriend perked his head up and said ‘Lord of the Rings?’
This is an inspiring album.

Natasha, I immediately thought of Metallica’s The Unforgiven II when I heard Escape Artist – though I like this track (and album) much, much more ;)
