“Reality is a dirty word for me, I know it isn’t for most people, but I am not interested. There’s too much of it about.” ~Ken Russell
Thanks for keepin’ it unreal, good sir. Thank you for everything.

Our movie critic at Mountain Xpress, Ken Hanke, was a friend of Russell’s (and a longtime fan). He’s written about his work a lot, but I particularly like this personal piece he wrote on the occasion of Russell’s 84th birthday:

“When all is said and done, that’s the real selling point for me — that all the films, one way or another, are essentially about the indomitability of the human spirit.”
Rest in peace, Mr. Russell, and thanks for some of the most beautifully, humanly unreal things ever put to film.
