Bristol Punks, 1977
They look like a macabre traveling circus troupe out of a Neil Gaiman novel. These images are from the Bristol Archive Records’ photostream, and were taken by John Spink. More from this set here.

Those sure look like New Romantics, not Punks, to me…

@Steve – I had the same thought as I posted this, but the caption did say “punks,” and I left the caption intact. I do wish we knew who they were so that we could interview them about their self-identification and the scene that they were a part of.

Well, if we’re gonna quantificate (TOTES A WORD) about these lovelies, I’m pretty sure ’77 is still pure punk era. Relatively certain the NR ethos didn’t emerge/coalesce until approx. two years later. Proto-New Romantic, mebbe? :D

I don’t care what they’re called. I just want that hat.

Pretty gothic.

@Fogsprig I don’t know about Gothic, but it is a nice Black & White candid.
@Meredith I concur on your assessment of the origins of this photograph. Let’s go with Proto-New Romantic. I, like you, have a love for fetish style photography.
@Steve & Nadya Romantics indeed… so romantic, it’s Shakespearean tragic.
