New Coco De Mer Ad: Whatever Tickles Your Fancy
It’s been a strange week for TV commercials. First, this asinine “Mow the Lawn” ad for a women’s shaver made me sad, prompting me to spend some quality time with my friends Feministing, SocImages and Genderfork. Then, there was this bizarre Thai toothpaste spot. The debate rages on as to whether this ad is racist or merely a comment on racism, but everyone agrees on one thing: it’s even sadder than The Red Balloon. By Friday I was just about to swear off any ad viewing for at least a week because it was bringing me down, but then the gem of a clip above appeared before my eyes. My favorite store in the world made an ad that Copyranter actually approves of? Oh my god. Oh my god. It’s a lunar eclipse. Everybody watch.

that store…you possibly just made my life…

“…Just spruce up your Aphrodite…”
With a line like that how could it possibly go wrong?
The Coco De Mer I like just for the simple hook of how they introduce each fetish. Part revelation, part surprise, part indulgence…none of the cliche hard nosed perversity that quickly makes such topics silly for some and unapproachable to others. Why can’t ads like this run at night? I’m sure many would appreciate it…
Where does this Ad air anyhow?

Just watched that “Mow The Lawn” ad. Talk about “sledge-hammer finesse”!

The coco add was at least creative and pretty subtle at times. The other two ads were downright wrong. The lawn ad made me kinda angry and want to AVOID their product, (in some way the ad seems sort of feminist) while the toothpaste ad, well that one is just sad.

Outstanding – two paws up. So rare to see commercial messages with even borderline creativity and open-mindedness – which makes those few pleasant surprises all the more enjoyable.
Cheers,

Uhhhhhhh… I’m gonna go with if you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say anything at all for the first two ads. The last ad came across as clever. For me I picture the people who created the ads… The first one will lose his job soon if not already. Oops…well I tried.

While that sort of thing almost never gets to me, that mow the lawn clip made me furious. How fucking dreadful. There’s a huge difference between making body care/health subjects more public (which I am all for) and implying publicly that body hair makes a woman gross. ARGGG. Where’s the boy mow the lawn version. I want it now.
As for the tooth paste one. I’m not even going there. Horrible.

Loved this ad but was a bit put off by the lousy copy on youtube. There’s a better version here –> http://www.boardsmag.com/screeningroom/tvfilm/7354.html?__s=yes; (Feel free to delete this comment if it’s not proper to link to other bloggish sites)

Lawn: I prefer nonshaven femmes. That commercial should die by fire.

This ad made me cry. Oy, it’s been a rough week.

Jez – which of the three ads made you cry?

I could do without the implied bestiality but the rest of the ad was adorable.

*delighted shiver* Coco de Mer, be still my heart. The ad was sweet, but that photo essay really made me swoon – such incredible imagery! Now where can I rustle up $170 for an embroidered organza mask?
I’ll pretend the other two didn’t happen.
