Paint It Black: Goths!

From the made-for-TV anthology, Spine Chillers, comes this short comedy Goths, starring Mackenzie Crook (The Office) and Mark Heap (Jam, Big Train). Our pathetic heroes, struggling to find a flat in London, think they’ve finally found the perfect gaff from the perfect landlord, when they discover they may have bought into more than they’ve bargained for:

You may recognize the pub in the first scene as being that of the iconic Devonshire Arms; you can even spot some of their current staff in amongst the punters.

Ooh! Mark Heap! Lets not forget his part in Spaced?!

Makes me think of the goth episode of The Mighty Boosh-
“Went to a grave yard yesterday… did a shit on a tomb stone”

  2. Milly von Hilly Says:

    Goth Detectives! *heart*
Yeah, he was Brian in Spaced as well, thanks for that. For me, he’s eternally Mr Lizard:

  3. Matt Sheret Says:

Ah, a classic I never caught. Thanks for that.

Like gooby says above, Heap as Brian in Spaced is something to behold:

Brian: “I’m trying to avoid cliches without actually touching the canvas with a brush!”
Tim: “What are you using then?”
    Brian: “My penis”
    Tim: “Finally”

  4. q gauti Says:

thanks for mentioning mr. lizard. the first time i saw that brought me dangerously near total loss of bladder control.

  5. Jerem Morrow Says:

Ah! Great stuff, this. Also, Mackenzie Crook never gets enough credit, even with his work on Pirates.

  6. Nadya Says:

Oh my god! Mark Heap looks hot in this! There’s just something so effortless about his delivery when he acts deranged (here, as Mr. Lizard, etc). I love him. So many precious moments in this… when they show off their tattoos, tint the milk black and of course the piercing scene. The ending was great. Thanks for uncovering this gem!

Also, I can’t believe that Mark Heap was born in 1952. He really must sacrifice to He Who Must Not Be Named!

  7. kristi Says:

I completely agree with Nadya about Mark Heap. I recently watched Spaced and developed a mini-crush on him. So..when i found out how old he actually was, i was more than surprised. I guess his career treats him well.

  8. Nadya Says:

I just totally watched a bunch of Spaced on YouTube (thanks, gooby!) and I must say that I h ave developed a full-blown crush on Mark Heap. He’s just so sexy!

His talent was completely underused in Stardust, I watched it and didn’t even realize it was him.

  9. Zoetica Says:

Say what you want, ladies, Mackenzie Crook’s been my man since The Office days. That nose! Rah.

  10. kris_ether Says:

That was awesome…. some I missed out on. Of course spaced is great, however I truely love Vulva

    “Oh Brian, you came”

“Um, no, just spilled my drink”

    priceless!

  11. Tanya Says:

Oooh this is great. And I see a Mighty Boosh reference. There’s a hilarious episode of “The IT Crowd” featuring Noel Fielding (of the Boosh & Goth Detectives & the big Quiz of the Year) in a HILARIOUS role as a Goth with a secret. I don’t want to spoil it for those who haven’t seen it, but it’s brilliant.

The entire episode can be seen on the Tube:
    Part 1
    Part 2
    Part 3

  12. the daniel Says:

Tanya – pretty sure there was no Boosh yet when Spine Chillers was on…

  13. gooby Says:

Nadya, loved that second clip! Throw Mark Heap and Henry Higgins together, I’m all there!

Milly, I am hyperventilating from Mr. Lizard, oh my!!!

  14. Tanya Says:

@ the Daniel – Oh I meant, I see Gooby mentioned the Boosh in a comment.

  15. mildred Says:

Nadya: I fear Spaced is going to become our next Battlestar. Gods help us.

Zo: Sorry, I look way to much like Mackenzie Crook to fancy him. But I’m happy for you.

Gooby: If you’ve recovered, here’s another:

Tanya+Kris: thanks for the links, the lols were many

  16. Skerror Says:

I like hearing that word, “Battlestar”. It reminds me of how I’m just starting on season 2.0…but it also saddens me because I know that one day I will run out of episodes :o

(edit) Also, I like this new edit option…and the revolving graphics on the side header. Nice tweaks!

  17. Nadya Says:

Tanya, I remember that IT crow episode, it was hilarious. And Kris that air-fighting sequence made me LOL in the middle of the night and probably wake up my housemate.

Skerror: Season 4 is less than 1 month away!

Meanwhile, the Mark Heap Appreciation Thread continues.

Though actually Kevin Eldon steals the show in that one. EVIL HYPNOTIST.

  18. Winominx Says:

That’s such an ice-breaker, “By the way, I’m a vampire.” I’ll keep that stored in my cranium for later when in a conversational pinch.
